This funeral was probably one of the hardest I have photographed. Their pain was so potent and you could almost feel it in the air. I also could not help but think of my almost 3 year old daughter at home and imagine what it would be like to loose her. When I photograph, I always try to make each image have a purpose or story. Especially with funerals and even if no one really understands why. I can't tell you the purpose behind all the images here but I'd like to tell you about this one. (rose image above)
This funeral was for Mia who passed away on August 3rd at the age of 5 years old.
She had a heart condition that gave her little time to live but thankfully her family was blessed with three years after her diagnoses to love her and care for her. I didn't know this until I arrived in Colorado, but Mia has the sweetest little brother who also has her same heart condition.
I was talking to Janet, the mother, about Mia before the funeral and I asked what her favorite color was. Mia loved the color blue but during the last couple weeks of her life, she had been asking for everything with the color red. We laughed about how odd and sweet that was.
When we arrived to the church, I went outside to prepare myself for a long emotional day and take some test shots when I saw this beautiful red rose.
In that moment, I felt such a sweet spirit and I wanted to capture this beautiful red rose in honor of Mia. There were many roses to pick from but when I saw this one, I knew that Mia would have loved it.
It was such a beautiful heartbreaking experience that I will always remember.
