ELORA'S BIRTH STORY
This is the birth story of my sister Ruth and her new baby Elora.
It was such a beautiful day to have a baby. It was like looking at a snow globe with all of that freshly fallen powder. Ruth's husband wasn't going to be able to be with her for the birth so I was her "birth partner." Ruth called me at 6:30am on February 19th and said she had been having steady contractions since 3am. I threw on some clothes and went straight over. I stayed with her for about 30 minutes before we decided to go to the hospital. We got there around 8am and were checked in about 8:30am.
Ruth had decided for personal reasons to have an non medicated, natural birth. I was also her doula/photographer. :) I have had three natural birth's myself and we had taken a hypnobabies birthing class so we felt pretty prepared going into this. Having said that, it was an exhausting experience. There were hours when i was holding her up during each contraction, pushing on pressure points and she was working like a superstar to relax her body.
When it came time for pushing we realized that the baby would be born within the amniotic sack. It is known as En-Caul Birth. Occurring in fewer than 1 in 80,000 births. The caul is harmless and is immediately removed by the physician or midwife upon delivery of the child. This is a VERY RARE occurrence and some believe it is a sign of good luck.
The word caul is Latin and means "head helmet."
Ruth really was fantastic and gave birth (without pain medication) to a beautiful baby at 10:51am on Feb 19th.
By the time it was all over, she was spent!! you'll see what i mean in the pics :)
Enjoy!
